When voters head to the polls this November to decide on Arnold Schwarzenegger’s collection of far-reaching government reforms, they’ll have a small fraternity of California business activists to thank, or criticize, for the privilege of participating in California’s second special election in three years.
The activists who lobby state government on behalf of large corporations and small businesses say they were buried by an avalanche of labor-friendly legislation for five years under former Democratic Gov. Gray Davis, including mandated increases in workers’ compensation insurance benefits for employees injured on the job.
But, since the day Schwarzenegger took office, they have been cruising downhill as the governor’s veto pen has cleared away almost every roadblock they believe would depress balance sheets and obstruct economic growth.
