Placerville’s ‘Crystal’ Has a Ball Searching
Old Haunts for Macabre Antique Collections

A Northern California businesswoman creates a dark and intriguing antique market niche while conjuring up a surprising following. Her name is simply “Crystal,” and she finds budding celebrity status in the courts of antique collectives as she boldly buys and sells ghoulish goods and Victorian and Gothic treasures.
     A few individuals take fascination with macabre realities, but an increasing number of professionals and “closet Goths” have embraced Crystal’s business concept of Gothic Rose Antiques located in an antiques co-op in downtown Petaluma.
    “It’s more than just antiques and de?cor. It’s a dark lifestyle that many people love,” says the 50-ish Crystal, who is single and has two grown children. Her favorite customers dress and decorate in black and surround themselves with skulls, cloven-hoofed beasts, mysterious Victorian treasures and funerary mementos.
