David Townsend: Blow K Street Up or Move On

By   | Dated November 20, 2007

Sacramento city leaders have two options downtown.

No. 1, blow up K Street. Again. OK, not with dynamite but with the same fearlessness and bulldozers that didn't work the last two times they tried it. Maybe they'll get lucky this time.

K Street's appeal - and as a 'hub central' - faded when the youth of the 1960's stopped cruising and making merry. The subsequent idea to pave it over and install ugly water features, then to have other revisions warp it even more, settles the argument that throwing money at a project does not define success by any means.

What we have now, is a micro version of San Francisco where the shopping districts are a mix of open urinals and vagrant confrontations. Until the figurtive 'high pressure hoses' blow away the patina of neglect, the area will continue to rot.

Great idea and maybe the increased investment in other parts of the deserving metro region will at last generate enough political will and community demand to actually fix K Street.

Help it by ignoring it for awhile...makes sense!
