Director of cultural affairs for Bay St. Louis and a woman who goes by the name of “Mike,” Mike Cuevas says CityTeam was sent by God. Unlike some volunteers who require a lot of maintenance from the local community, Cuevas says no one has ever complained about demands from CityTeam. “And I’d hear it if they did,” says Cuevas, known to locals as Ms. Mike.
Williams says the mission in the Gulf Coast is more than just about rebuilding homes; it’s about rebuilding a spiritual community. “Their faith has been shaken,” he says. “Their relationship with God is shaken.”
Despite CityTeam’s religious focus, Cuevas says it has integrated itself into the area and respected the beliefs of this largely Catholic community. She says words can’t sum up what it’s been — and continues to be — like unless you’ve lived through something like Katrina.
“We’ve been very depressed and very worn out,” Cuevas says. “(CityTeam) sustained me in some of my worst days, both professionally and personally.”   SUKHJIT PUREWAL
