ART advocates emphasize foam rollers and physio balls to assist in their clients’ recovery. Dr. Andreana Mevoli, a Berkeley-based chiropractor and ART specialist, says, “Anyone who sees me gets foam roller exercises to supplement their recovery.” Mevoli works with athletes and active adults to get them back out on the field as quickly as possible. “My goal is to get the muscles to stabilize so that the problem won’t recur.”
She stresses that it is important to limit the rolling of any one area of your body to no more than 60 seconds. She also says the physio ball, or Swiss ball, can turn the “bore” exercises such as crunches, push ups and the like into more challenging “core” exercises. For rollers its about knowing your density. The harder, or more dense, the roller is the more durable and effective it will be. Mevoli recommends the black roller from OPTP.
Many of these exercises require more strength, balance, and coordination than you realize so start slowly and carefully. And, remember, it’s always important before starting any new physical activity or regimen to consult with a physician or specialist.

Foam Roller Benefits

•     Assists warming up as it lengthens the muscles and facilitates stretching
•    Helps cooling down in similar way to deep-tissue massage
•    Reduces repetitive strain injuries from aberrant posture
•    Works for nearly every muscle in the body
