Insight into what drives an ultramarathoner and ranked miler
Sounds simple, but maybe she’s onto something because Kosinski is the fastest women’s high-school miler in the country. At this spring’s Meet of Champions at Hughes Stadium in Sacramento, she set the new record by running a 4:38:15 mile. In her winning race, the track-and-field star from El Dorado Hills competed against the then-record holder, Jordan Hasay, who’s also a California runner.
Kosinski says the presence of the previous champion quickened the pace. “You always run faster in a race,” she says, “(but) I knew this was going to be a really fast race.” The victory could have gone to her opponent, who led earlier in the race, but Kosinski’s strategic final thrust left her with a 5-second lead and a national record.
Temperate and practical during most of the interview, Kosinski betrays her delight at the win with a spirited nod and an uninhibited smile. You’d better ask her now to autograph your jogging shoes, because Kosinski sees no end in sight to her running career.
“Every time I have a good training day or a good race, I get the ‘runner’s high,’ ” she says. “That’s one of the reasons why I love to run so much.” She’ll continue to learn by experience this fall as a student-athlete at the University of Oregon in the running-friendly town of Eugene, powering up with her preferred early morning chocolate, soy milk and protein powder shakes.
