“Most of the management team has been here at least 20 years now,” she says, referring to the radiation oncology division. “From an employee’s standpoint, this company is run the way companies ought to be run.”
A critical element in RAS’ success has been its ability to attract top-notch physicians, such as J.J. “Buddy” Connors, an amiable, slow-talking Southerner who loves to joke and talk in sports metaphors and is also one of the nation’s leading intervention neurological radiologists. He is one of the world’s leading brain specialists, whose specialty is stroke victims.
SACRAMENTO: KIND OF NORMAL
RAS recruited Connors, who played hard to get at first, but RAS was relentless, and Connors agreed to join the group in July. Connors, who is from rural Louisiana, made a visit to Sacramento last spring.
“I wasn’t sure what I would find out there in California, but I was impressed that the people in Sacramento seemed kind of normal,” he says with a laugh. “I was more than pleasantly surprised by how friendly and down-to-earth people are here. I had people in the check-out line in the grocery store inviting me over for a 4th of July picnic. Sacramento is far from being a detriment to RAS recruiting. It’s a definite asset.”
But it was the company that ultimately swayed Connors. “It’s like having an entire, well-run football team on your side, not just a quarterback and a halfback,” he says. “RAS has the best business model in the country for this type of activity. We’re doing things for stroke victims that have never been done before, and that’s only possible because of the support we have here.”
Logsdon is another example of RAS’ ability to recruit top prospects. Logsdon is considered one of the top oncologists in the country, and his division deals exclusively with cancer patients, especially breast and prostate cancer victims.
He was also lured to Sacramento because of the RAS business model. “There is nothing else like it nationwide,” he says. “We doctors are able to practice medicine the way we want to, but at the same time, RAS recognizes the need for professional business management. Most doctors’ groups don’t consider the business aspect of things as being that important. Here, it is a top priority.”
One of the challenges facing the company is a constant need to raise the vast amounts of capital needed to purchase new technology. To remain competitive, RAS is faced with millions of dollars worth of capital expenditures every year.
