Local Company Hits and Misses

This designer of temperature-regulating gear for military personnel and firefighters, as well as medical technology for neurological disorders, is in "semi-dormancy," according to founder and President Bill Elkins, though he says the company did outfit Mayor Heather Fargo with gear that helps her with her multiple sclerosis. He said in October "significant funding" was likely in 60 days. "We still expect an order from the military, but the bureaucracy delayed it," he said. Established in November 2004, bioCool operates from the McClellan Technology Incubator.
International Display Works Inc.
Flextronics International Ltd., a Singapore-based electronics manufacturer, acquired this designer and manufacturer of liquid crystal display components and assemblies in September 2006. Flextronics valued the all-stock transaction at $243 million when the deal became final two months later. IDW operated 466,000 square feet of manufacturing facilities in China. Only 10 of its 3,500 employees worked in Roseville. The number of local employees remains the same.
Jadoo Power Systems Inc.
This has been a year of change for this Folsom company, which provides portable power fuel cells that can be used by first responders, broadcasters and defense agencies. It replaced its president and CEO, Larry Bawden, with its vice president of business development, Lee Arikara, a week after receiving another round of financing (amount undisclosed), led by Velocity Venture Capital LLC of Folsom. In the management shuffle, Bawden became chairman. Jadoo's work force has dropped -- from more than 30 employees in 2006 to 20 -- as the company changes direction. "A positive cash flow is only a few months away," Arikara says, and "our strategy is geared toward that." As part of the shift, Jadoo is moving away from direct sales and toward teaming with partners. For instance, it's working with Acumentrics Corp. of Massachusetts to develop quiet portable generators that can run on either propane or hydrogen.
