Gia McNutt, who owns Rocklin-based SOS with her husband, Lawrence, describes business as "gangbusters." The company, which specializes in internet-based phone service for mid-size and small businesses, is on a hiring spree and now employs nearly 40 full-time staffers. "I'm not used to hiring so many people all at once," McNutt says. SOS is slated to moveing this month to more than 12,000 square feet that it's purchased in Loomis and will also lease space in another building nearby. The company expects to beat its profit goal for this year of $4.75 million, on revenue of about $11.5 million. Plans to open a Phoenix office to pursue call center telephony, however, were edged out by other initiatives, such as offering managed services and "hosted" telephony.
SynapSense
This Folsom-based startup, which develops wireless-sensor technology, has landed its second round of outside financing, $10 million from investors led by Emerald Technology Ventures. Emerald, which has offices in Zurich, Switzerland and Montreal, invests in clean technology. The investment brings SynapSense's total financing to $12 million, says board chairman Corley Phillips. "This makes SynapSense one of the best-financed companies in the Sacramento area," Phillips says. In another development, SynapSense has been working with IBM on a pilot project. SynapSense's technology could cut energy use in data centers, which interests IBM. The sensors measure such things as temperature, humidity and atmospheric pressure. "The benefits of an IBM relationship should include introductions to potential customers, as well as having IBM as a direct customer," Phillips says.
