"Getting in touch with people from a different background helps you step back and take a look at your own identity," says Robinson, 52, who lives in Folsom with his wife, Marsha. "You're called to love everybody and to care for your flock regardless of where you're coming from."

Robinson grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area an only child with deeply religious parents who brought him to church as soon as he could breathe. He says he gave his life to Jesus Christ when he was 4. From then on, his life revolved around Sunday school, youth groups, outreach efforts and eventually young adult ministry. He married Marsha in 1977 after meeting her at a Baptist church in Danville and then moved north to go to Western Baptist Seminary in Portland. Disillusionment followed.

The more he studied at the Protestant school, the more he felt misguided. The teachings, he says, seemed disjointed, lacking a certain historical context. He longed for something deeper, richer and rooted in ancient rituals.

"I was looking for some ministry niche in the wider evangelical world," he says. "Where is my legitimacy? What is my relationship to these men and women in the first through fourth centuries?"
