Last Monday, Google announced that it was entering the mobile phone market with it's free Open Source OS offering Android. If you haven't heard it has already partnered with several wireless cariers. The apparent motivation was to open the wireless landscape to cross-plaform development.

The week before Google also announced it's OpenSocial initiative. It is essentially a method for the diverse Social Networks such as MySpace and Facebook to talk to one another and share information. Last I heard all of the major player except Facebook are on board. Facebook is currently in the last stages of development on their own API which would serve the same purpose.

Both of these announcements have seen a good deal of press. They will have many ramifications in the marketplace. There is one angle I havent' seen covered yet. Both of these projects will seriously increase the scope of the gadget ecology that google has been fostering.

Look for gadgets more and more to become a part of everyday web life. Smart developers will get on the bandwagon now.
