Coffee tables are generally pretty plain when it comes to technology. Sure, some tables have hidden compartments for DVD's and others have little slidey things that make them easier to eat at, but when it comes to innovation coffee tables aren't really at the top of the list... until now.
The Microsoft Surface coffee table is essentially a Windows Vista machine placed inside a table with a 30" touch-screen on top. The system will reportedly recognize both finger movements and physical objects. For example, Microsoft claims that when a diner sets down a wine glass on the table, the glass will be recognized and more wine information will appear. Prices for 'Surface' are expected to range anywhere from $5,000 to $10,000 when it is first released, with more affordable models coming in the next few years.
Mac users haven't been left out of the cool coffee table game. The good folks at SAVANT have developed a Mac based coffee table very similar to Surface called the ROSIE Coffee Table. The ROSIE sports a 40" screen and serves as a home entertainment hub with iTunes and home automation capabilities. No word on prices or availability for this one.
