1. Sponsor a noon movie. Once a week, set up a DVD in the conference or lunch room and show a humorous movie. Let the employees bring in their own DVDs, or join an online service, so they can participate in choosing the movies. If time is limited, show reruns of some TV comedies such as “Frasier” or “Seinfield.”
2. Establish a humor corner. Set up one section of the office as a place for humor, and encourage employees to post cartoons, jokes or other funny materials.
3. Get out of the office. Whenever possible, hold meetings outside the office. Use the coffee shop down the street or a local restaurant. If weather permits, hold a meeting outside. Fresh air, when combined with a change in activity, can boost productivity along with morale.
4. Liven up your memos. Purchase a book of one-liners, and include a good joke at the bottom of your memos.
5. Run a guess-the-baby contest. Ask staff to bring in baby photos, and post them on the wall in the lunch room. Award a free lunch or movie tickets to the employee who makes the most correct matches.
6. Institute “Late Day Mondays.” Allow one-quarter of your employees to come in one hour late on each of the four Mondays in a month. You also could allow employees to leave an hour early on a Friday.
7. Take pictures. Most everyone in your employees’ age group likes to see photos of themselves. Every office has an aspiring photographer who can take candid shots of employees. Add them to the “humor corner” or use them as a PowerPoint presentation at the annual holiday party.
8. Celebrate, celebrate, celebrate. Put together a party team that plans company parties. There is usually something to celebrate each month.
9. Play with the dress code. If your company culture allows, hold an “ugly pants,” “ugly tie” or “ugly sweater” day. Give prizes to the winners.
10. Bring your smile to work. You will be surprised at the difference it makes. If you and your managers have an upbeat attitude, so will your employees.
