North of Lake Tahoe in Loyalton, Calif., Jacob Carlson owns and operates the only art glass studio/gallery in Sierra County, about an hour’s drive north of Truckee. Although Carlson, 33, has spent the last 10 years practicing his craft, he is still thrilled by the process. “I love to watch the hot glass turn from solid to liquid. It gives me butterflies in my stomach,” he says. Carlson’s work includes functional items such as ornate sinks and chandeliers, but his true passion is for more organic art pieces or what he describes as “things you can’t put a flower in.” He doesn’t appreciate the competition and inherent secretiveness involved in the business of art glass, so he teaches anyone interested in learning and rents out his 2,000-sq.-ft. studio to other artists seeking space.
