Out For A Bite
By Neil Michel
The vampire bat is typically found only in South America, but as warmer temperatures near the equator push more bats north, there’s no telling how many vampires could arrive in Sacramento, or who the y’ll bring with them (See “Business Style,” page 72). Call it global climate change or just bad luck, but a ye ar of wicked weather has Sacramento’s bat population at the tip-toeing point. In fact, so many vampire bats are dropping into local supermarkets that some late-night shoppers are now accustomed to the sightings.
Actually, bats do get a bad rap. The planet’s 1,100 species of bat comprise more than 25 percent of all mammal species on earth (yes, bats are warm-blooded, give live birth and feed their young with milk) but only four bats actually drink blood — and only one drinks mammal blood.
Which brings us to the subject in the photo. This vampire, quite harmless, a paying costumer and well behaved in social situations, keeps his unruly habits to himself. His only (forgive the pun) beef? Flash photography.
