A Chance To Be a Contender
I knew it was just a matter of time before the business blog on prospermag.com hit a nerve and became an epicenter for discourse regarding a pressing local matter. But did I see myself opposing my friend, my partner, a person I admire and respect completely? No way.
But upon further reflection, Mike Teel and I agreed to disagree on the 1/4 cent countywide sales tax increase proposal on the November ballot. We decided to pen side-by-side blogs to encourage civility in an era of political polarization.
Already we are hearing a lot about the debate on the measures Q and R. It has proven to be the most contentious and opinionated issue on the ballot this year, as it has repercussions for everyone that lives and works in our community.
But Mike and I encourage dialogue rather than debate. We encourage the dynamics of a group and how its members can learn and exchange views. The blog site is a safe haven for intellectual discovery, without the spin, without the negativity.
With all of that said, however, I can argue that this is my column and I can advocate if I want to.
So ask yourself these questions. Do we want to be a “real” city, or not? Do we want to make a dramatic commitment to one of the biggest developable parcels in the urban USA, or not? Do we want smart growth, new jobs and a world class entertainment center, or not? Do we want to be a city that keeps and attracts our young talent, or not?
The bottom line to me is the simplest question of all. Does Sacramento want to be a contender? I say we do, and I say we have to play the game just like other cities do.
