The UC Davis Cancer Center Approach
By Jeanne Winnick Brennan
“It’s not what you know, but who you know” is something your grandmother probably told you. She was right. Friendships are worth their weight in gold, and tremendous things can happen in business and life through the power of friendship and powerful friends.
When an idea’s architect can massage a database of personal contacts and build the perfect team to turn concept into reality, it’s more than impressive; it’s an art form. Inside our nation’s finest laboratories and medical centers, engineers and research scientists work closely together for years, boosting discoveries that yield exciting medical breakthroughs. And in our local communities, personal contacts build the support to make those breakthroughs happen. The energy is contagious and great things are the result.
Sacramento’s National Cancer CenterOne of those highly energized laboratories is located at the
UC Davis Cancer Center now in its 30th year of cancer care. Ralph W. De Vere White, M.D., a professor of urology and director of the cancer center, understands this prescription for success. He’s guided the center to its present status as a National Cancer Institute facility and a premier prostate cancer organization by uniting teams of friends, families, survivors, medical colleagues, scientists, researchers, engineers, fundraisers, community leaders, universities and government agencies. There are more than 5,700 American Hospital Association-registered hospitals in the country; only 61 have the NCI distinction.
The newest national cancer facility, the center today is the beneficiary of a team of dedicated professionals whose goal is to garner more than $74 million for its extramural research support, patient services and prevention education. Members of this powerful network are serving more than 6 million people in 37 counties, as they contribute to the fight against cancer. (See UC Davis Cancer Center timeline). “We have teams of more than 220 members in 12 different schools and colleges, including great programs with the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and the UC Davis Veterinary School, for really unique cancer research,” says De Vere White.
