Understand the tax system — what it punishes and what it rewards.

    The tax system works for people who know how to use it to reduce taxes on expenses and investments, and the government punishes hard if you don’t carefully document and report all of your claims. It’s complicated, but you can advance your position and save money if you understand your opportunities. Don’t forget payroll, independent-contract and local-tax issues.

• Know the code and independent contractor definitions.
• Find a CPA you trust.
