While currently better known for controversial political statements, the Dixie Chicks’ first release in four years solidifies their talent as musicians. Mixing their country sound with the combination of pop and rock music and some amazing songwriters, the group has created a strong, confident album.

Nearing 70 years old, experimental Brazilian artist Tom Zé has created an intricate and timely blend of musical portraits and conversations on his latest release for David Byrne’s influential World Beat label. Zé combines classic Brazilian styles, such as the bossa nova, with improvised music from the street and edgy sampling to talk of the age-old power struggles of men and women.
