Anchors Aweigh!
Willie Feltus, the man who brought Sacramento the radio-station-sponsored “oldies but goodies” party boats years ago, is now plying the waters of the Delta aboard a high-speed catamaran ferry. The Delta River Cruise is a day-long smorgasbord of transit modes: Arrive by car, hop aboard a bus, jump on the train, board a boat and leave by car. Or do it in reverse. With this adventure, it’s indeed not the destination but the journey that counts.
Traveling by the popular Capital Corridor train, ride over the rails and see the Delta wetlands, the San Pablo Bayshore and Suisun Bay at water level. On the way back, board the Delta Breeze, a 100-foot-long catamaran owned by Harbor Bay Marine, a 4-hour trip up through the San Francisco Bay to the Delta and then via the Sacramento River Deep Water Channel to the Port of Sacramento. Depending on the day of the week, excursions either start with a train ride and cruise back, or vice versa.
The ticket of $150 includes parking, bus shuttle, boat ride, train ride, lunch, beverage and some goofy prizes you can win during the onboard Bingo game. Maritime docent Bill Stritzel adds a splash of history during the boat ride, and a layover allows some must-do shopping at the new Ferry Building Marketplace. Best seats (covered and open) are on the top deck right behind the pilot house. Reservations are required: (916) 399-9342 or
