Cubes Gone Wild
By Neil Michel
The trend toward open floor plans and lower partitions between cubicles is credited with increasing communication and improving work quality. But it also means your personal stuff is on display (see Business Style, page 70).
Designer Jinnelle Fong spends most of her cube time drawing interiors of hospitals and medical office buildings. But she also pimps her own workspace to the amusement of fellow creatives at Lionakis Beaumont Design Group in downtown Sacramento.
Fong’s latest cubicle features a provocative blend of design elements that includes a collection of furry balls, a stuffed dwarf, a $1 million bill and a leash. “The leash got a lot of comments, but it’s really just a tether made to hold a computer cart to a wall,” explains the mild-mannered Fong.
Fong denies any link between her cube decor and rumors of wild, partygirl antics. “I face the side of our building that doesn’t have windows. You have to do what you can.”
