Sen. Figueroa Calls For Small-Biz Portal
By Melinda Eppler
Too many small businesses in California are having a hard time finding information about state regulations. At least that’s the foundation from which SB 1436 was built. The bill’s author, Sen. Liz Figueroa (D-Fremont), crafted this bill to centralize all state regulatory standards onto one easily accessible web portal, to be located on the official California state website. Additionally, the bill will authorize the creation of a much-needed small-business ombudsman (or woman).
Specifically, SB 1436 would require each state agency that has a significant role in small-business regulation or impacts small business in a big way —
Cal EPA, for example — to designate at least one individual who shall serve as a small-business liaison for the agency. Each liaison would have specified duties that include reviewing and updating content on the agency website that is accessible through the small-business link at the state of California internet portal.
If this bill, which seems to be a smart one, is to see the light of day, it better move through the process quickly, as the senator is running for lieutenant governor.
