With the season of building and remodeling in full swing, homeowners get the bug to start favorite projects. Before you take the plunge, put Sacramento’s new “Guide to Residential Permits” at the top of your summer reading list.
Published by the Department of Building Services, the new 17-page guide is the latest example of the city’s many efforts to treat residents as customers. As City Manager Ray Kerridge and Development Services Director Bill Thomas often say, “Our goal is to get our customers to success.”
The can-do attitude has caught on. When you visit one of the city’s two development services permit centers in the New City Hall Building or in Natomas at 2101 Arena Blvd., you sense you are being helped by a staff of problem solvers who want to remove the roadblocks and coach you, your architect or your contractor through the process.
On average, the city issues more than 70 percent of 18,000 annual permits at the counter. Of those, 11,000 permits are for repairs or renovations of single-family homes. To make the process more efficient, the city provides identical services at its two permit centers between 7:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Also, a new, convenient Homeowner Night has been initiated.
A series of brown bag “Lunch and Learn” informal consumer seminars have been launched to cover the basics of the building and planning processes. Topics include zoning, design review and/or historic preservation and just what projects require permits, such as garage conversions, new buildings, additions, decks, and even water heaters, and ceiling fans, but not all fences or sheds.
