You Can Make A Difference
By Warren Smith
Our country thrives on the premise that anyone can raise his or her hand and be a leader. Ideally, to hold political office is to serve country, and candidates step up because they care and want to make a difference.
But in Sacramento, the pool of people willing to lead is limited to those already working in the political system. Because of this narrow pool of volunteers, Sacramento-area government rarely finds the best and the brightest.
To compound the problem, business people think they don’t have time to get involved, and encouraging bright employees to raise their hands may affect a business’s bottom line.
So what happens? Often, we don’t have the opportunity to elect leaders that understand basic business principles.
Equally frustrating are the closed wallets of many business leaders. Candidates that understand business principles need financial support. But those in business who claim a nonpolitical, don’t-rock-the boat philosophy are often the ones complaining about regulation and red tape.
So, please, GET INVOLVED! If you can’t raise your hand, encourage a talented employee or community business leader to run for office. Praise officials in office making good decisions, and speak up to those that don’t. Make investments in candidates that share your business principles. If you are not aware of candidates who will advocate for you, contact your local chamber or the Metro Chamber of Commerce for their input.
Your investment will pay a return. The electeds will notice, as they read all the filings and follow the money. As business supports more and more sensible people, the message to potential candidates will be clear. We are looking for candidates we can trust.
