Practice Makes Perfect
By Neil Michel
Ask anyone who has applied for a building permit since Ray Kerridge and Bill Thomas came to town, and you’ll hear a kind of glee never before associated with Sacramento’s planning and building departments.
Armed with the grit of martial arts experts, a pro-developer attitude and a top-secret organizational MATRIX (see “Bright Minds, Better Building,” page 36), this dynamic duo lured from Portland has made its mission perfectly clear: A new city will rise from the ashes of Sacramento’s old system, even if they have to build it themselves.
Kerridge always has fresh batteries in a scale-model construction crane in his office so he and Thomas can keep their skills sharp; Kerridge steadies the bucket and Thomas sets the hook.
What’s in the bucket? Piles of dirt from Capitol Mall? Reams of obsolete paperwork once required for city construction projects? The bodies of all those bureaucrats who suddenly disappeared last year?
“It’s where I hide my little candies,” Kerridge admits.
Just ask, and he’ll give you one of the chewy fruit-flavored yummies (the kind that often come with the check at mid-level restaurants). And, what’s more important, if you’re interested and qualified, Kerridge might even let you run the crane.
