Committed Advocates Clash With Staunch Defenders: PG&E vs. SMUD
Hostile Takeover or Annexation?

When it comes to utilities, a lot of locals feel as if they’re in the dark. Two years ago, several Yolo County communities asked the Sacramento Municipal Utility District to annex their towns, replacing utility provider Pacific Gas & Electric, so they could take advantage of SMUD’s lower prices.
PG&E naturally took exception to this. After all, no one likes the competition taking a bite out of the pie, no matter how tiny the nibble. Now both companies are throwing all their weight into their campaigns to provide service to these communities.
PG&E claims that Sacramento SMUD customers will likely have to pay the bill for the Yolo County annexation. SMUD insists that Yolo County residents will pay for it themselves and still see monthly savings. The fur is flying thick and fast with charges and countercharges.
