What's the Big Idea?
GAINES: “The Blueprint (Project) concept of higher densities, (with) more reliance on mass transit or other modes, such as biking or even walking, will help maintain our quality of life.”
PETERS: “The airlines think tourism is a big deal. They analyze tourist sites, ? gure out how many people want to visit and how long they want to stay. Increasing tourism will bring more direct ?ights.”
BROTHERS: “We need candy and medicine. ‘Candy’ is the arenas, the amphitheaters, the parks on the river. ‘Medicine’ is a transportation infrastructure, a commercial port, an expanded airport. How do we sell the two side by side and which drives what?”
On the Riverfront
KOLOKOTRONIS: “How do we make Sacramento well known all over the world? Everybody in Europe talks (as if) our Sacramento Kings are NBA champions. Then Arnold came to town, and my friends all over the world learned of our community. Knowing the community, that is No. 1.”
The 2003 Master Plan orchestrated by the cities of Sacramento and West Sacramento includes residential neighborhoods, high-rise housing towers, retail and business developments, entertainment venues and a river parkway between Old Sacramento and Miller Park featuring trails, ?shing ponds and recreational areas.
ROCCA: “If you look at it, our riverfront is much prettier than say, San Antonio’s. If you put an arena, a beautiful amphitheater and another bridge connecting downtown Sacramento with West Sacramento, you would have… a very cool central area.”
HARTLEY: “What we are looking for here is something you could put on a postage stamp. Something that, if done, would make Sacramento come instantly to mind to the person just hearing it.”
