Did We Say That?
It was an honor to be one of your December 2005 “Whiz Kids.” Up until the present moment, I enjoyed your magazine, but the article that ran about me was terrible for one major reason: the writer completely misquoted me.
The statement, “The U.S. Vietnamese community is, unfortunately, highly illiterate,” was not from me. The writer was negligent in paraphrasing my words based on my actual comment that many Vietnamese people still choose to read in Vietnamese. There is a major distinction here. Data shows that 80 percent of Vietnamese Americans and ethnic community adults access some form of ethnic media on a regular basis. The fact is that the Vietnamese have one of the highest literacy rates in the world.

Editor’s note: The quote in question does beg the question: “Why would a magazine publisher say his target audience is illiterate? Prosper regrets inadvertently making such an egregious error. We are proud to have Rich Nguyen in the community and in the publishing business. Prosper laments the misrepresentation of his mission and the angst the misquotation might cause. Nguyen’s much-deserved recognition as a Whiz Kid is reinforced by his courteous response to this unfortunate incident.
