It Can Really Pay To Recycle in Sacramento
Each month for the past year the Sacramento Department of Utilities has awarded a monthly $100 cash prize to two randomly selected residents who practice proper recycling.
The waste reduction coordinator for the city, Michael Root, selects a district and drives the streets somewhat aimlessly before stopping and checking out a recycling bin. If everything inside the bin is recyclable and there are no contaminants the resident is given $100. If not, the money is added to the next month’s tally, which starts to make it interesting.
Sacramento Earth Day Network and BLT Enterprises are funding this recycling incentive program to promote recycling and sustainable living in the area. Sacramento collects approximately 300,000 tons of garbage per year and only 36,000 tons of recycling.
“If somebody puts the wrong articles in their recycling, then the city has to pay $36.08 per ton to have someone sort through it, remove the contaminants and have it taken to the dump,” says Root.
To find out what is recyclable and what isn’t, residents can check out the department of public works website or look in the SBC yellow pages, which has a recycling guide from the city.
