Costigan Can Take a Punch

His diet consists of coffee, soda and Mexican food. He works 14-hour days that extend through state government’s otherwise quiet season (his wife and kids took a three-week summer vacation without him) and many of the people he deals with on a daily basis use him as a proverbial punching bag.
But Richard Costigan III loves his job as deputy chief of staff and legislative affairs secretary to Gov. Schwarzenegger and has never been happier, at least not professionally.
“I love this job,” he says. “As some folks have told me, it’s the best job I’ll ever have.”
When you strip away the words encompassing Costigan’s lofty job title, his occupation at its core is to serve as the governor’s chief negotiator for policy and legislation with the business community and outside interest groups, as well as the 120 legislators who represent California’s 35 million citizens.
