A familiar whistle pierces the air and the floor jerks from beneath your feet as iron hitches noisily snap taut. The train lurches forward, then settles into a rhythmic swaying as the scenery slowly passes. The era when rail travel ruled the West is captured in the Sacramento RiverTrain’s excursions along the Yolo Short Line.
With the Great Pumpkin Express scheduled to operate every Sunday in October and a special Oktoberfest trip planned for midmonth, autumn is the ideal time to climb aboard and experience a taste of rail travel.
Open every weekend and additional days during the Christmas holiday season, each jaunt has a specific theme, such as the three-hour Murder Mystery Dinner Theater (in which riders get involved in solving a mock crime) and the Grapevine Express, which includes live music, dancing and wine tasting on board. Each of these adults-only voyages costs $35 per person.
