Embracing the Grape After a Fashion

In the tasting room of Narrow Gate Vineyards, Pleasant Valley’s newest winery, a customer points to the wine list and asks winemaker Frank Hildebrand of what he is most proud. With no hesitation, Frank, 47, responds, “My kids and my wife.”
“OK,” the customer tries again. “Of the stuff that comes in a bottle.”
Wine tasting is personal, Frank says, and he doesn’t want to influence his customers’ decisions. But Frank might have felt a little differently in his former life, when he and his wife, Teena Hildebrand, 44, were jet-setting fashion executives. As regional vice president of sales, Frank peddled designer labels for New York-based Swank Fashion Inc., an international fashion distributor. The family had a dual income that paid for nannies, housekeepers and a house four blocks from the ocean. But Teena’s jobs with Calvin Klein and casual-bag maker LeSportsac Inc., fashioned a void at home.
“I felt like I had no control over my life,” Teena says. “All I was doing was managing people.”
