Now What?: September
Central City Parking Woes,
A Humble Apology,
and Hints for the Campaign Trail
By Melinda Eppler
In January 2005, the city of Sacramento initiated a comprehensive study to identify feasible parking policies and programs that would support its goals, citizens and businesses.
As the “central city” grows to include new office, retail and residential projects, the ever-present parking issue continues to negatively impact city staff and policy-makers, local and new businesses and area residents. To be sure, the goal of developing a diverse downtown area with a variety of land uses (residential, entertainment and commercial) creates challenges in the area of parking demand and supply.
To proactively address current and future growth and development, Sacramento Department of Transportation initiated a comprehensive on-street and off-street parking study in the downtown area last January.
The Central City Parking Master Plan boundaries encompass the Sacramento River to the west, the American River to the north, Alhambra Boulevard to the east, and Broadway to the south. Although a series of public meetings have already taken place, concerned citizens still have time to review the draft proposal and put in their two cents.
The city will be hosting an open house sometime in September. For more information, to be placed on the project mailing list or for questions, please contact Fran Halbakken of the Department of Transportation at fhalbakken@cityofsacramento.org, or (916) 808-7194.
