Unplugged: September
Radio Man by Day Blues Brother by Night
By Anne Gonzales
Talk about vertical integration. When Michael Hernandez isn’t grabbing Sacramento airwave market share, he’s grabbing an electric guitar and creating waves of his own.
By day, Hernandez is the manager of three local radio stations, keeping operations humming and revenues upbeat. In his off time, Hernandez lays down lead guitar riffs and sings for his red-hot Texas blues band, the Rhythm Vandals. During his music career, he’s cut three CDs and opened for such major acts as Elvin Bishop, Eddie Money, Maria Muldaur and Tower of Power.
Hernandez works the business end of sound as station manager for three Infinity Broadcasting Corp. stations: The Zone, KZZO 100.5; The Mix, KYMX 96.1; and “Home of the Kings” KHTK Sports 1140 AM.
The six-piece Rhythm Vandals performs big music events such as the California Brewers Festival and the Sacramento Chili Cook-Off, as well as the Corona Cantina for Kings basketball games at Arco Arena. They also play clubs, promotional concerts, private parties and weddings from San Francisco to South Lake Tahoe.
Hernandez coined the name Rhythm Vandals and formed the band a decade ago as an alternative rock group, but three years ago he returned to his first love and favorite musical genre, Texas blues with a rock edge. He and the original band members have been singing the blues ever since, performing their brand of blues and rock with dual guitar solos, harmonica, keyboards, bass and drums.
