The temptation to say that Harvard-educated economist Jennifer Fearing has gone to the dogs is almost overwhelming.
After eight years as a successful economic analyst and self-described policy wonk with Econ One Research — starting in Los Angeles and including her most recent title as the No. 2 person in the Sacramento office — Fearing bolted from her $200,000-plus per year salaried position in 2003 to run United Animal Nations, a growing Sacramento-based animal advocacy group, where she now earns $65,000 per year.
But two years after making what appeared at the time to be a radical career switch, the 33-year-old vegetarian and marathon runner has clearly brought her sharp business mind, analytical skills and political
talents to bear on being the president and CEO of the nonprofit.
And she says she doesn’t look back wistfully at her former job — or the salary.
“My thesis is, I wasn’t unhappy, I just wasn’t totally happy. I’m shocked at how heroic people seem to think what I did is. It’s one or the other: ‘You’re crazy, or you’re amazing.’”
