Adopt a Bike at UC Davis, Grab New Ski Gear at Sac State
Love to bike and hit the slopes? Into flea markets, auctions and swap meets? If so, be sure to check out Sacramento State’s ski swap and University of California, Davis’ bike auction in October.
Sac State’s ski swap is put on by the Ski & Snowboard Club and features local vendors and resorts such as Sugar Bowl and Heavenly. The major resorts bring door prizes and free lift tickets to the event, while vendors sell new winter gear at discounted prices. One can also find used skis, snowboards and boots sold on consignment by the general public.
Last year a portion of the $400,000 generated was donated to the university’s fund for the proposed wellness, recreation and events center.
At the Davis bike auction, slated for October 8, approximately 350-400 bikes are sold every spring and fall, making a nearly $10,000 profit for Transportation and Parking Services (TAPS) at the school.
Throughout the year bikes that “look abandoned” are collected by the department and held for 90 days before being eligible for auction. Abandoned bikes often have flat tires, missing chains or other indicators that they have been abandoned, making them a great deal at auction. Most bikes sell for $30 or less, says David Takemoto-Weerts, bicycle program coordinator for TAPS. “Most of these bikes are fixer-uppers.”
