Living the Luxe Life
Downtown Towers Lure Top Dogs
By Harrison Sheppard
Come on down for the rising. There’s no denying there’ll be a new downtown soon, and you’ll never guess who is leading the way.
Not a developer, nor a politician. But one of what could be thousands of suburban professionals who are flocking back to the city. Back to nightlife, entertainment and shopping. Back to easy access to work and services, and away from traffic and the headaches of maintaining a large home in the ’burbs.
“I’m getting older; I’m looking for an easier lifestyle,’’ says the 48-year-old Derrick Fong, a downtown restaurant owner who lives in Granite Bay. “I want less maintenance, ease of entry, freeway access. It’s mainly about scaling down.”
These professionals are, if all goes according to plan, expected to come back mostly because of a series of new high-rise luxury condominium projects planned for downtown.
Chief among them are The Towers on Capitol Mall by Sacramento-based Saca Development, and Aura by Denver-based
BCN Development. Between them the two projects will add more than 1,000 luxury condo units downtown. Other smaller projects are expected to add at least 1,000 more units downtown in the next few years.
