When the summer sun sizzles, it’s time to go underground and explore the cool caves, caverns and mines riddling the Gold Country.
The subterranean venues trail off Highway 49, the byway linking foothills Gold Rush communities. A trip to underground adventures leads through historic districts where saloons, boutiques and inns savor the flavor of days gone by.
Incorporating shopping, antiquing and dining into a day trip can turn it into a weekend of exploration. And with numerous seasonal attractions in the area, an extra tank of gas could stretch the visit into a weeklong vacation.
Touring the Mines
About 40 miles southeast of Sacramento, Sutter Creek holds Sutter Gold Mine, where hard-rock mining operations are resuming. Motorized buggies tote tourists into the mountain for lectures on regional mining history and dangers faced by early miners. Visitors easily climb through shafts and walk along drifts in the lodestone.
