In another place, this unassuming khaki tent — complete with fake palm trees and AstroTurf — might be mistaken for a desert oasis. But in the courtyard outside the Governor's office, the tent is anything but a refuge. Constructed in the early days of Gov. Schwarzennegger’s administration, the tent was intended to be the one place the governor and select guests could partake in savory combustables.
But the governor’s affinity for fine cigars has met vocal opposition (can you hear the coughs?) from nearby office dwellers who prefer not to open their windows for a breath of fresh air only to inhale a breath of fresh Cohiba.
These days, the tent is used more for group meetings than for smoking (see “Arnold’s Army page 28). The governor has however maintained his right to smoke anything he wants in the tent, which (in accordance with the law) stands just over 20 feet from the nearest door. —NM
