Leaders We Can Trust

By Carol Chamberlain

Prosper, as a rule, parks politics exclusively in the “Now What” page by Melinda Eppler. However, sometimes we’ll abandon that narrow stance when a political topic is simply unavoidable.
So, as the lazy summer fades to fall, and the special election called by Gov. Schwarzenegger is about to escalate to full throttle, this issue of Prosper dabbles in the world that once defined Sacramento.
David Drucker introduces Prosper readers to the leaders of “Arnold’s Army” (page 26) in his timely piece on business advocates who support Gov. Schwarzenegger. (Why should organized labor get all the press?) Political preferences aside, and voting records indicate that most of us have none, it is important to get to know business leaders advocating for business-related government reform.
Allan Zaremberg, president and CEO of the California Chamber of Commerce (see Cornered page 17) is pounding the Capitol corridors demanding good government — not for Republicans or Democrats — but for the betterment of the California economy. And, since superior education and healthcare are certainly good for the economy, he advocates for that, too.
Likewise, Zaremberg, other business leaders, and local chambers of commerce conclude that Gov. Schwarzenegger’s proposed amendment to overhaul the state constitution to limit government spending is good for the California economy. Their recommendation to vote yes on the “Live Within Our Means” Act is based on solid research.
The truth is, they did our homework for us. We can launch businesses, increase sales and make money our families can count on knowing an attempt at good government is taking place by chamber representatives — the real leaders for business.
What a relief to forgo the upcoming election rhetoric, turn off the contentious pundit back-and-forth and trust the research of leaders advocating a strong California economy.
