Graphic Center produces such jobs as the university’s alumni magazine, new student packages and Mondavi Center programs. Jason English, account rep, has been handling the UC Davis account for more than five years and has nothing but praise for the university, especially when it “could send the jobs to China, if it felt like it.
“We work with an in-house graphics project management team. It assesses the vendors and knows who qualifies before it sends out the bid. Sometimes the team might expect a three- or four-hour turnaround and we could be bidding against as many as seven other vendors.
“Profitability is low,” acknowledges English, “but considering what UC Davis is giving back to the community, we feel indebted to some degree.”
A university that prides itself on its research and the quality of its “incubation” will look to nurture the local business environment even more. Among other efforts, UC Davis launched a new program – CONNECT – to support regional entrepreneurs and technology-based startup companies from the earliest stages through to growth and early maturity.

Grants will continue to be a bigger part of those efforts. “Out of 20 grant applications coming in (to the university at any one time), we might land three to five of them,” Dean Biggart says. “The money comes in to produce studies that lead to intellectual products. We had $75 million in patents last year and it’s going up, which it needs to.”
