Tom Campbell: Hand-picked for Budget Fix

Would you like a bite of my muffin?”
    It’s an incredible question, if only because the person asking is state finance director Tom Campbell, the man hand-picked by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to help resolve the perpetual mess that is California’s budget.
    It also comes a few minutes after Campbell has purchased two cups of coffee — one for himself, one for his guest – as he leads the way deep into the belly of the Capitol in Sacramento.
    It’s a rare, simple kindness rarely bestowed from politician to reporter. Campbell is clearly different from most politicos, particularly those who cut their political teeth in the power-hungry halls of Congress.
    You might also say Campbell is an optimist. Why else would someone with years of success in Washington, Sacramento and private industry behind him — and now securely ensconced at one of the nation’s pre-eminent universities — leave the comfort of academia for the hot seat of California government during some of the most tumultuous times in recent memory?
