Flirting With Disaster
“Any business that doesn’t have a plan is flirting with disaster, so we expect the vendors we count on to have a plan, too,” he says. “We won’t do business with any company that doesn’t.”
Jacks says having organizations such as CalPERS pushing for preparedness is a key element in getting other businesses on board with the concept. He says another big boost is coming from the governor’s office, noting that Gov. Schwarzenegger “very much wants to help prevent disasters” for California businesses.
To that end, first lady Maria Shriver has made both personal and business disaster mitigation a key part of her own agenda for 2005. She has advocated on behalf of a disaster campaign that focuses on family preparedness. Jacks says he hopes that involvement will convince companies big and small that a good mitigation and recovery plan is simply good business.
“Our job is to show businesses how this kind of preparation can positively affect their bottom line,” he says.
