Years-long Waiting Lists to Resign
Del Paso, the region’s oldest country club, began making the shift about six years ago. Its demographics already reflect the change.
“Over the past five years we’ve taken in between 80 and 100 new families,” says Hutchinson. “Six years ago our average age was 72 or 73, and that’s down now to 64.”
Renovation or Trauma?
Del Paso also has shut down its course for a $9 million renovation. The members voted for the upgrade 3-to-1, says Hutchinson, but some found the changes too traumatic and put their memberships up for sale.
For the duration, Del Paso has arranged for its members to use the course at Morgan Creek Golf & Country Club in Roseville. Morgan Creek, too, has jumped on the family bandwagon. We have a family center with a pool, designed with a kids’ water park.”
Morgan Creek opened in the summer of 2003. As with many new country clubs, it’s the centerpiece for an upscale housing development. Unlike most, however, the course was finished before the housing, and that hurt membership sales. Only about 50 memberships were sold before sales were suspended and the deal was inked with Del Paso.
