Area's Country Clubs Losing Social Status - And Members

A well-off El Dorado Hills couple were thinking about a lifestyle change — maybe downsize the house, travel more and sell their golf membership in Serrano Country Club.     
     Lucky for them they aren’t in a hurry. They discovered there’s a three-year waiting list of members who want to get out and who can only sell their membership through the club.
     “We were told the club is selling about 29 memberships a year, or only about 2-1/2 a month, so we decided to get on the list,” says the husband, who asked that his name not be used.     
     That’s not a slam against Serrano, which gets high marks from other country club managers in the region.     
     “Every club in this market has a waiting list of people who want to sell their memberships,” says Cliff Hutchinson, CEO at Del Paso Country Club. The wait may vary — at Del Paso it’s about a year and a half — but such lists are normal now, he says.
