     Some health practitioners, notably chiropractors, believe many of the effects of aging are symptomatic of musculoskeletal and neurological problems.     
     “The wear and tear of daily activity causes imbalances to accumulate over time, leading to malfunctions of the nervous system,” says chiropractor Jesse Defrese of Davis. He regards chiropractors as neuro-musculoskeletal specialists who treat patients using “adjustments” intended to improve and maintain nervous system function.     
     “Many facial appearances are due to tension in facial muscles or chronic habits, such as frowning. That reflex  creates wrinkles, and you look older,” says Defrese. “A lot of it has to do with how you’re dealing with stress.     
     “Consequently, if the adjustment can help create more of a relaxed, smooth-running system, you’ll have a more youthful, relaxed appearance.”     
     Defrese’s charge for a six-month course of corrective chiropractic treatment runs about $1,000. He recommends periodic visits beyond that for preventive care.  

Alternative Approaches
     Although physicians may be skeptical, many people prefer nontraditional approaches, including growth hormone digestible supplements and injections; sound therapies using crystal bowls, tuning forks and drums; herbs and natural medicines; intravenous vitamin and immune drips; and detoxification and drainage.     
     Sacramento hypnotherapist Katherine Zimmerman says hypnosis can be instrumental in improving appearance by virtue of its ability to help achieve a state of deep mental and physical relaxation.
