Luring MacDonald Morris to Lipomics Technologies Inc. to be its first chief technology officer and vice president of bioinformatics is “very big, on a number of levels,” says Steve Watkins, a co-founder, president and chief scientific officer for the privately held West Sacramento biotech company.
Morris, 42, was a founding scientist at Affymetrix Inc., a Santa Clara life sciences company with 2004 sales of $340 million; then he moved up to senior scientist from 1993 to 1998. He’s credited with developing the original algorithms for chip design and data analysis, as well as ways to enable high-density printing.
“He’s been part of the whole development of informatics (information science) at Affymetrix,” Watkins says of Morris, who has a Ph.D. in mathematics from Stanford University. “We’re really pleased to bring such a high-end talent from Silicon Valley to Sacramento.”
