Landmark Gold-Country Hotel Comes to Life

Tom and Sussy Flanigan could be called “accidental owners” of a classy — and classic —bed and breakfast in the historic town of Dutch Flat, eight miles east of Colfax and just a few steep miles off Interstate 80.
    When they discovered the shuttered Dutch Flat Hotel one weekend while hunting for a mountain home, Sussy and Tom were living in San Jose, in what they describe as “a typical tract house.”
    Sussy was running her financially successful medical-services company. Tom was self-employed as a home inspector through his Accurate Inspections business. They had been married just more than five years, combining their families and living with five nearly grown teenagers in one house.
    Both were ready for a change from their Bay Area lifestyle. Sussy, 45, sold her business and the family’s San Jose home, dumping all the money into the purchase and renovation of the hotel.
