UOP Opens ‘Ivory Tower’Business Forecasting Center
The University of the Pacific (UOP) has entered the prediction pool. Prof. Sean Snaith, a business economist, has joined UOP in Stockton as director of its new Business Forecasting Center.
    Snaith, 37, held a similar post at the University of North Dakota. Stockton is a dramatic change in scenery, but Snaith has made such transitions before. He earlier worked in Boston and he grew up in the Pittsburgh area.
    Now he’ll be looking at California’s statewide economy, plus 11 metro areas in a triangle bounded by Sacramento, Fresno and the Bay Area.
    “It’s a community-outreach situation where you tap into the expertise in the ivory tower that can benefit businesses and local decision makers,” he says. “Nobody in this region is going to be doing what we’re doing to the extent we’re doing it. We’re set to cover an area that has been ignored by some of the larger players.”
    Snaith credits Congressman Richard Pombo (R-Tracy) for securing the $400,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Education to fund the center. He also hopes to take on revenue-generating research projects for the university.
