Light-Rail Expansion
In Sacramento city’s Economic Development Department, senior project managers Dean Peckham and Tammy Brownlow are enthusiastic about the high level of developer interest in some of the light-rail station locations.
RT recently issued a RFQ for the disposition of its property at the Florin Road Station — a call for developers to show their ability to meet transit-oriented development criteria, rather than submit specific development plans.
In North Sacramento, the Globe Station, at Globe Avenue and Del Paso Boulevard, is targeted for a mixed-use development that includes loft living.
The city redevelopment agency is undertaking land use, environmental, traffic and infrastructure analyses for the Swanston Station, which is also in North Sacramento.
‘Industrial’ Look
Along R Street, the buildings around the 13th Street and 16th Street stations will maintain their “industrial” looks, while being converted for the appropriate mixed uses sought for light-rail stations.
At the 65th Street Transit Village, the 65th and Folsom site, a 140-acre area south of the station is earmarked for retail and residential development. The retail portion is expected to capitalize on the recently opened Jefferson Commons student-housing complex.
Overall, RT has outlined transit-oriented development plans for 21 of its light-rail stations, accompanied by RFQs. They’re described in the “Transit for Livable Communities Plan,” a joint study by RT, the Sacramento Area Council of Governments, city and county governments of Sacramento, light-rail advocates and developers.
